The Keyword Trap


There's a lot of myths and confusion about keywords.



When I first started this business in 1994 everybody chased a single keyword, usually one that secribed their trade or profession, - just one word and worked hard to try and achieve the number position in Google based on that chosen keyword.

Needless to say the internet evolved and websites increased by the billions, or even trillions and searchers got more savvy and used local geographic terms and more specific queries, this resulted in much more powerful 'long tail keywords'.

Website owners still spend a lot of time using free software wizards from the giant search engines (who want to sell sponsored advertising) – these are often red herrings and can cost you dearly.

Keyword research is extremely important but probably more important, is knowing how to extract the right information.

You might be researching a particular market for potentially powerful keywords but knowing how to act upon the results and data that you have discovered could be the difference between hurting your business, and of course your website.

A big mistake that website owners make is that they have 'perceived' keywords based on their own results or what they think their competitors are using. What they don't know is what keywords are being used that are NOT finding them, but their competitors are being found and gaining that business.

Wrongful assumptions are giving competitors the edge!

Understanding keyword research.

A major issue about keyword research and what causes the most damage for website owners who carry out their own keyword research is wrongly reading the results and adopting them as solid absolutes.

Most keyword research tools, particularly the free keyword tools offered by search engines are intended to be used as comparison tools - not a lazy way of gaining knowledge or indeed some keyword wizard.

If you do use free keyword research tools, don't rely on just one or two. None are totally accurate and you will have a more accurate view of your keyword market when you take the time to study the data, equally a broader study will help you identify a much stronger approach with your SEO and website marketing campaigns.

So if you do use keyword research wizards be mindful that comparison keyword research is far more powerful, and accurate. Don't just rely on the estimated search volume of a particular keyword as a stand alone example..

There are keywords and keywords!

If your website is geared for selling online then your keyword research needs to focus on keywords that revolves around buyers, not just 'moochers'. Having said that, people often mooch around looking for information prior to buying, but it is crucially important that your website SEO (search engine optimization) is geared to attract buyers.

Keyword research is crucially important to a successful website but many website owners don't understand the benefits of performing keyword research properly.
