How to get more visitors to your website

Traffic is the word that is thrown about all over cyber space, it means 'human visitors' and you need to stimulate traffic.

There's no silver bullet here and many of these tips may have been done by you already whilst others may have never heard of them.

I need to throw some caution here, don't dabble if you can't undo and if you haven't got the time or inclination, get a website marketing expert to do it, not the local computer techie.

This is about your business, your living, so take it seriously ...end of caution!

Consider using SMS text messaging

This is a fantstic, very powerful method to direct people to your website, remind them of appointments, opportunities, special offers etc. Don't get this confused with spam scam messages, this type is genuine opt in and welcomed by your clients.

It's cheap too! Test it my sending a text to 88802 and in the message type 'show' (without the quotes)

Search Engine Strategies

This is probably the most important, yet least inexpensive part of website marketing. The strategy is to rank high in the main search engines for your nominated keywords. We're focusing on "organic" or "natural" search results as opposed to sponsored links such as Adwords.

The fine tuning we're talking about here is in the source code. Search engines such as Google send robots or spiders to crawl your website pages and ultimately index the content of your page.
Professional preparation is important and compliance is essential, understanding and adhering to rules and regulations will prevent you from being penalised. The message here is not to try and trick the search engines.

It is important to include your most important keywords in Headers (H1, H2, H3).

The top search engines consider those keywords that appear in the page headline (H1) and sub headlines (H2, H3, H4) to be of considerable importance. With this in mind ensure your nominated keywords and phrases appear in one or two header tags.

Many website designers choose not to use the H1, H2, H3 tags and this is one of the many differences between a website designer and a website marketing expert.

I think this choice came about as CSS began to be popular and designers didn't define these tags in the CSS .

Search engines won't parse your Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) to figure out which are the headlines, so you need to use keywords in the H1, H2, and H3 tags to provide clues to the search engine. Insist that your website designer defines these tags in the CSS rather than creating headline tags with other names.

As much as search engines expect that your big and bold words are of significant importance, this rule applies to first paragraph, it is expected to contain the most important keywords.

Do not just stuff keywords otherwise it will cost you dearly. Don't over-egg the omelette!

Search engines need clues that you consider to be important to your website. When they see words hyperlinked in your body text, they assume that these are important because you have hyperlinked the subject. So hyperlink your important keywords and key phrases.

For years and years I have banged the drum about local website marketing, whilst the rest of the world was thinking global … I was still thinking local!

More and more people search for local businesses on the Internet even using mobile phones. If you rely on local trade you need to sharpen your website to ensure they find you before your competitors.

Get yourself in Google places and look towards building links in local directories.

Create a video, I use simple slide videos in You Tube. Google's "universal search" displays not only websites, but often shows relevant listings for videos. Contact me for help with this.

Create a strategy of links to your website from other websites because this will certainly drive additional traffic. In addition Google and other major search engines consider the volume of incoming links to your website as an important indicator its relevance, the more links you have the more it will help you rank higher in the search engines, it is called link popularity.

You can dramatically increase traffic to your website by submitting articles in your area of expertise. These are not blogs nor should they be PR or flag waving exercises. I distribute them to editors and they are often used for their e-mail newsletters and published their websites. Stipulating that a link to your website and a one-line description of what you offer must be included with the article. This is "viral" marketing.

Create newsworthy stories I send news releases to online news websites, it will temporarily improve traffic to your website and increase link popularity, being mindful that news is replaced all the time so the more frequent news the better.

Among the best online communities for business are Google Plus, Facebook, linkedin, and Twitter. There is a social bookmarking community in which members share with each others information about their chosen websites, articles, or news items etc.

It is a worthwhile SEO strategy to suggest your visitors bookmark your website in sites such as Digg, Delicious, Stumbleupon, Google.com/bookmarks because search engine spiders crawl them in a quest for new and relevant links .

Consider promoting your site in forums, there's thousands of highly targeted forums and social media groups made up of people with very specialised interests.

Make sure that all business cards, stationery, brochures, and literature contain your business website address.

By taking no action, nothing will improve.
